Bow Thayer and The Holy Plow at Chandler
Tuesday, January 17, 2012
Bow Thayer and the Holy Plow combines the talents of three of Vermont’s most creative musical minds. The acoustic trio led by songwriter and rocker Bow Thayer brings their Americana and roots music to Chandler’s 2012 Live & Upstairs series in the Esther Mesh room on Saturday February 4 at 7:30 PM. A cash bar will be available.Bow Thayer’s provocative and dynamic original music is reinterpreted through the lens of guitarist/producer Kristina Stykos and Patrick Ross, the Northeast Kingdom’s fiddler par excellence. Led by Thayer, they drive the Holy Plow through previously uncultivated regions of a story-driven, musical and magical universe.
Originally from Hingham, Mass. and well known as a member of the popular alt-grass Boston band The Benders, Bow Thayer has been the driving force behind his newest acoustic project, The Holy Plow, as lead singer and songwriter. His roots music has inspired comparisons to Bob Dylan, John Prine and Gram Parsons. It reflects a diverse career that has explored musical genres from punk to reggae, and bluegrass to Delta blues. Thayer plays all things stringed, most notably guitar and banjo. His rock band, Perfect Trainwreck, recorded their album “Spend it All” (2006) at Levon Helms’ studio in Woodstock NY, with Levon on drums, and their newest album, “Bottom of the Sky” (2010), was designated an album of the year. Thayer last performed at Chandler in 2010 with Perfect Trainwreck in a benefit performance for Chandler’s renovation and expansion project.
Kristina Stykos is a recording engineer, songwriter, producer and guitarist who came of age in the heartland of an exploding folk music scene in Ithaca, NY. In addition to her performing with The Holy Plow, she runs Pepperbox Studio, a solar, wind and generator-powered professional recording studio. Her acclaimed solo album “Raven” (2011) was performed and co-produced with Grammy nominated pianist Philip Aaberg, in a cross-country collaboration straddling Vermont and Montana. She has just returned from a month long artist residency at the Ucross Foundation in Wyoming.
Patrick Ross has been making music around the North Country ever since he received his first fiddle at age three and began playing at house parties. The fifth generation fiddler, born and brought up in Canaan, has lived in Nashville, Los Angeles and the suburbs of London and performed with Willie Nelson, Bela Fleck, Sheryl Crow, and The Counting Crows. His experiences – both at home and abroad – have helped him mature as a musician, and have affirmed the importance of his connection to the people and landscape of northern Vermont and the desire to live simply and close to the land.
Bow and Kristina bumped into each other in the backcountry of rural Vermont in 2009 somewhat accidentally, but quickly realized their common musical ground and launched into an experimental recording project. Kristina knew Patrick from her many years of watching young up-and-coming regional fiddlers. Adding his talents to the mix proved to be an inspiration and resulted in the group’s 2010 release “Shooting Arrows at the Moon”. It was out of this successful artistic collaboration that Bow Thayer and The Holy Plow was born.
Tickets are $16 in advance and $19 day of show. Seating is limited for this performance. Discounted advance tickets can be purchased through the Chandler Box Office by calling 802-728-6464. If available, tickets will also be available at the door on February 4. The performance space is wheelchair accessible.
