Woods Tea Company at Chandler Music Hall in Randolph, Vermont

Wednesday, February 29, 2012

Woods Tea Company brings their acoustic traditional and original music and wealth of instrumental and vocal combinations to Chandler Music Hall in Randolph on Friday March 9 at 7:30 PM. Established in 1981, Woods Tea Co. features a unique style of audience rapport and music with rich vocal harmonies.

Woods Tea Company performs Celtic tunes, sea shanties, French-Canadian and American folk songs with equal skill and ease. All members are multi-instrumentalists and fine vocalists and their performances are notable for their tight harmonies. Folk Music Quarterly described them as “…one of the hottest up and coming acts, … sidestepping pretension and going for the grit, this New England group gives a lusty performance every time.”

Based in Vermont, the trio features Howard Wooden on vocals, bass guitar, bodhran; Tom MacKenzie on vocals, hammered dulcimer, banjo, guitar, ukulele and keyboard; and Patti Casey on vocals, guitar, flute, penny whistle and clogboard.

After building a solid reputation in New England, Woods Tea Company started touring nationally, eventually playing in all lower 48 states. Notable performances include New York’s Lincoln Center, the Chautauqua Institute and appearances on PBS and National Public Radio, who labeled them as “Vermont’s hardest working folk group.” The Irish Heritage Foundation honored them with their Outstanding Innovation Award in appreciation for and recognition of their creative contributions to Irish music.

Woods Tea Company has seen many changes in personnel in the past few years, starting with the tragic deaths of Rusty Jacobs and Chip Chase. Two bright spots followed these difficult losses: in 2007 former bandmate Tom MacKenzie rejoined the group, and in 2008 Patti Casey signed on. Inimitable band member Mike Lussen retired in 2010. In light of all these changes, the ensemble returns to the stability of its roots as a solid trio. Now more than ever, with its wealth of instrumental and vocal combinations, a trio makes sense.

Reserved tickets for this performance are $17 in advance and $20 on the day of the show. They can be ordered online at www.chandler-arts.org or by calling the Box Office at 802-728-6464 between 3 and 6 PM weekdays. A limited number of $10 seats are available through the box office only. Chandler Music Hall is physically accessible.

Patrons interested in using Chandler’s new assisted listening system supported by donations from Vermont Lions Charities are encouraged to indicate their need when ticket reservations are made and to arrive with sufficient time to get properly set up.
