Dodge City, Kansas, Is The Real Deal As One Of True West Magazine's Top True Western Towns

Dodge City. It’s part of the American culture, in part because it was the setting of the long-running TV series Gunsmoke. But the old cattle town is the real deal, a place where the Old West continues to live and breathe.

That is one reason why Dodge City, Kansas, is #2 among True West Magazine’s Top True Western Towns. It will be featured in the February 2013 issue, at newsstands on January 1, 2013. Fort Smith, Arkansas, took the top spot.

Visitors (an estimated 150,000 last year) experience the old days through historic buildings including the George Hinkle House (circa 1880), the First Presbyterian Church (1880) and the St. Cornelius Episcopal Church (1898). The Boot Hill Museum shares information on virtually all aspects of the town’s heritage—American Indian culture, Fort Dodge, the railroads and, of course, many of the colorful characters who once lived there.

Then there’s the renowned Dodge City Days, the 10-day festival features a rodeo, parade, barbecue contest and Western art show—very impressive for a town with a population of nearly 28,000.

“Dodge City residents are justifiably proud of the town’s heritage, and they work hard to share it with visitors,” says True West Executive Editor Bob Boze Bell. “The local preservation efforts and outstanding events make it truly a True Western Town.”

This is the eighth year True West has presented this annual award. Editors base their selection on criteria demonstrating how each town has preserved its history through buildings, museums and other institutions, events and promotions of historic resources.
