Liberty Hall Museum Announces Community Farmers Market
Friday, March 22, 2013
UNION, N.J. – With Opening Day and the resumption of public tours just weeks away, Liberty Hall Museum has announced preliminary details for an exciting new community initiative: the Liberty Hall Museum Community Farmers Market. Beginning on June 6, the Museum will host a weekly Farmers Market on its grounds every Thursday from June until November. Shoppers will be able to choose from fresh local produce, meat, poultry, dairy, eggs, baked goods, prepared foods, and arts and crafts. “We feel that the market is a way of reconnecting with our roots,” said Market Manager Susan De Pauw, who is also a graduate of Kean University. “Liberty Hall was a working farm from 1772 until the twentieth century. We were a source of fresh local food for the community way before it was trendy or chic. We like to say we are ‘a little bit of the country surrounded by the city,’ and so we felt it was the right time to take this step with an urban farmer's market.” Some of the local produce for sale will be provided by Liberty Hall’s own farm, which occupies four acres of the Museum’s extensive grounds. The farm currently supplies fresh fruits and vegetables to the elegant farm-to-table restaurant Ursino, which is located in Kean’s New Jersey Center for Science, Technology and Mathematics (known to most on campus as the STEM building). Named one of New Jersey’s top 25 restaurants by NJ Monthly in 2012, Ursino emphasizes locally produced products, and boasts an impressive list of small businesses founded and still based in the state of New Jersey as its preferred vendors. The Liberty Hall Museum Community Farmers Market and its corresponding enrichment programs, geared for children pre-kindergarten age through high school, will be supported by a generous grant from The 1772 Foundation. The 1772 Foundation seeks to preserve architectural and cultural history for future generations through various restoration projects. In anticipation of its official launch in June, the Liberty Hall Museum Community Farmers Market has collaborated with a popular online “go-to guide” for area mothers, the New Jersey Moms Guide, to provide a free planting activity for children on Saturday, April 20, the Kids’ Spring Seedling Event. From 10:00 a.m. – Noon, children will celebrate the advent of spring by touring Liberty Hall’s farm, enjoying healthy snacks and live storytelling, and planting seeds in portable containers they may take home to nurture and watch grow. Admission to the event is free, but capacity is limited; interested parents and educators should email [email protected] by April 15 to reserve space. Liberty Hall Museum at Kean University chronicles more than 240 years of American history. The museum also houses extensive collections of furniture, ceramics, textiles, toys and tools owned by seven generations of the Livingston and Kean families. The Firehouse Museum, built in 2004, houses three antique fire engines, including a rare 1911 American LaFrance Metropolitan Steam Engine. Public tours of the Museum resume on Monday, April 1, and run Monday-Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Admission is free for Kean University students and faculty.More from :
